Dr. Margaret Penning is interested in the social structuring of health and health care as well as in how, within their contexts, people attempt to deal with chronic illness and disability (including their use of self-care practices, informal social supports, and formal service utilization) particularly in later life. She is also a Research Affiliate of the Centre on Aging at the University of Victoria.



Margaret Penning's main current research interests are:

  • Population health, especially for vulnerable sub-populations like the elderly
  • Access to, and utilization of, health services
  • Chronic illness and psychological-social support for the ill
